Topic: Understanding Environmental, Social & Governance Factors
& Responsible Investment
“ESG” refers to environmental, social and governance factors which may have a financial impact on an investment. More specifically, it is an enhanced analysis of companies that provides a better understanding of an investment’s overall risk and opportunity. There are several options available to investors seeking to incorporate ESG factors in their investment portfolios, including full ESG integration, socially responsible investing, impact investing and philanthropy. Each has its own merits, and it is up to the investor to choose which option will best meet their goals for risk and return. A key question around the topic of ESG asks whether it can improve investment performance. Recent studies have revealed numerous links between ESG factors and a company’s financial performance indicating that the two are positively correlated. There is increasing evidence that companies taking full account of ESG factors often foster a culture of distinction and discipline which can lead to strong long-term performance.
